The
initials "AAUP" stand for the American Association of
University Professors. The organization was founded in 1915 by a group of
distinguished educators, including John Dewey and Arthur O. Lovejoy,
to promote academic freedom and
collegiality in America's colleges and universities. In doing so, the
AAUP sought to create an atmosphere
compatible with free inquiry and the exchange of ideas in higher education. The
AAUP remains committed to these
goals, and central to these efforts is the Association's defense of
academic freedom & tenure and the
professional standing of all members of the professoriate. |
